The TP-Link RE505X is one of the most economical Wi-Fi range extenders available, and it features compatibility for Wi-Fi 6, which means it offers faster, more efficient speeds for current-generation devices equipped with the most up-to-date Wi-Fi radio technology. Another advantage of Wi-Fi 6 extenders is that they are more future-proof since they allow you to take advantage of greater speeds, alleviate network congestion caused by several connected devices, and generally perform better in a home with many connected devices. After moving the extension to the more difficult place, the RE315 was able to compete with our top selection in certain tests, but it was unable to defeat it across enough of them, finishing on average half as quickly as our primary pick when it fell short of the mark in those tests. When we placed the extender in our more convenient, line-of-sight testing position, it functioned admirably in all of our tests and exceeded expectations.
For those who are satisfied with their current router but require a little more range in one specific area (for example, if you set up a home office this past year and haven’t been receiving a strong enough signal there) and do not intend to place a large number of bandwidth-hungry devices in that area, this is the ideal solution. Inexpensive Wi-Fi 5 wireless extender from TP-Link, the RE315 allows you to quickly and easily set up a simple, fast-enough Wi-Fi connection in a new area. In contrast to other extenders, there was nothing about its general performance that caused us to second guess ourselves. The TP-Link RE605X scored admirably in both this and our simpler, almost-line-of-sight test, which we conducted afterward.
Everything else we tested had issues at some point, usually when we switched to a more challenging test that involved placing a large number of walls and furniture between the extender and the laptop we were testing it with. The RE605X, out of all the extenders we tested, had the strongest wifi signal across the greatest distance. We found that it provided constant, high performance across 90 percent of our benchmarks, and while it wasn’t the quickest on every metric, no other extender we tested was able to match it in terms of overall real-world performance.
